Sometimes I find it hard to explain what I do as a Somatic Therapist. Then, I wonder to myself, why is that? Why, if I love what I do, believe in the importance of what I do, do I have a hard time explaining it?
So, today, I’m thinking, it’s time to get over myself. Time to share a little about why I do what I do and why I think this kind of work could help you too.
I have been blessed with a past that has required a lot of healing in order for me to find my way back to myself. I have also been blessed with children, whom I love, and for whom my healing or lack thereof has great, long lasting consequences. I have also been blessed with parents who did not do their own work to heal and so served as a great example to me of what can happen if we do not do our work to heal ourselves and fully show up in the world. And, I have been blessed with courage, curiosity and willingness to keep digging so that what I saw as the norm around me, left me unsatisfied and drove me to ask questions about myself and others, and to seek a different way. For all of this and more, I am eternally grateful because it is from this place, from this search, that I am able to bring a different way to you.
So, what is my different way? Well, really it is a combination of the things that I have found most helpful in my own healing journey, practices I use and modalities I have studied. I guess I’m like a chef that has hunted for the food, spent hours gathering it, preparing it and am now serving it up for you. I have tried all the food myself, that is, I have used these methods and modalities to heal….I am not offering you theory, but am offering you things that really work.
First, I use a base of Jungian Psychotherapy. I love the work of Carl Jung, and Jungian analysts. This was one of the first places where I discovered how soul was instrumental in my journey and my healing. It kindled a love in me for mythology, fairy tales, our amazing dream world and for a deep psychoanalytic look into our lives. This is more than changing our behavior, it’s a deep dive into why we have these behavior in the first place and the process of Individuation (becoming who we really are). From here I found the work of Depth Psychologist, Eco-Psychologist and Jungian Analyst, Bill Plotkin. Here’s where things really began to get interesting. Training with Bill and Animas Valley Institute took me to edges in myself I didn’t even know I had. I learning about my Whole Self, the part of me that was never touched by my trauma, I learned about my fragments, my Loyal Soldier/Inner Critic, Escapist/Addict, My Wounded Child and my Shadow. I learned how to fully feel my feelings and those of the wounded parts of me. I learned how to bring all the parts of me to feast at my table so that I could integrate and learn to deeply love myself, have grace for who I had become as a result of my trauma and what might be possible in the future. I delved deep into my own soul and learned tools to help others do the same. I truly value this work and this training. I will never be the same.
Next, I pay tribute to my training in and experiencing of Rosen Method Bodywork. It was during these trainings that some of my deepest traumas surfaced to be met by me and loved into healing. It was during these trainings that I learned to be with myself and others in a deep way. I learned how to be more in my body, to take my healing cues from what was surfacing from the depths of my body and to let intense emotions move through me. I learned the role our body plays in containing and storing our trauma and how to gently let it surface. I am forever grateful for this training and experience. I am a much fuller, embodied person as a result.
Using Rosen Method and my training with Bill Plotkin, I believe, together, form a potent model for letting things surface from our body, to be met and healed by our Whole Selves. We store our fragmented selves, our trauma and unconscious memories in our bodies so as they surface, we need to access our Whole Selves in order to heal them….don’t worry, I can show you how to do that.
Lastly, but not least, since I don’t plan to ever stop adding tools to my tool belt, I have begun training in Biodynamic Cranialsacral Therapy. Rosen Method focuses on our muscles and our breathing and Biodynamic Cranialsacral focuses on even more, more anatomy, structures, organs, as well as our body’s ability to heal itself and restore balance. I felt that this was a missing piece for me, the expertise of what is happening in your body while you are perhaps doing the emotional work of healing your fragmented self. Plus, this training will open up my practice to babies and children and enable me to work with birth trauma before it becomes a thing you need healing from in your 40’s. I love Cranialsacral because it also focuses on your wholeness, on what’s right with you, not just what is wrong, which is a foundational aspect to my practice.
I also am a Reiki Master and I believe I am always using the energy of Reiki as well.
So, I offer a gathering of tools, a deep look into why you are the way you are and why you do what you do. I offer a way to become a more embodied you, to know your body from the inside out. I offer tools to learn to really listen to yourself, to take your healing cues from your inner world, not just your outer one. This kind of embodiment is key! Learning how to be in our bodies, to listen deeper to ourselves….its importance can’t be overstated.
I offer tools so that you can learn to heal yourself, wherever you are, wherever you go. I offer presence and a capacity to hold you and your story while you journey because I have learned to be present to me and my story first. I offer skilled hands, and the abilities of someone who has done her own work and will continue to do so, someone who is not afraid to be with hard things, someone who can teach you to love even the broken parts of yourself and who can help you open up to what is possible. I am so passionate about this topic. I believe it to be the biggest responsibility each of us has. If we don’t heal ourselves, we will most definitely pass on our pain and while we don’t want to do that, it’s inevitable….hurt people, hurt people.
So, what would make you my ideal client? Well, what I've written above would really resonate with you. You would also have a deep desire to know yourself on a deeper level and perhaps you have a sense of it being time. Time to heal, time to discover, time for changes. Perhaps you also know that your body is trying to tell you something, you just don't know what it is. Maybe, you have a real sense that you are not even living in your body but you'd like to be. Another clue might be that you know there is more to you, you just need help to find it.
I would be honored to help you re-member yourself. Will you journey with me?
I offer in office sessions as well as Wholeness work done outside supported by nature. After all, the world around us supports our healing journey.
I will not say that the journey of healing is easy, but it is SOOO worth it!
You will never be the same.
