We dream every 90 minutes during a regular night's sleep. "Every hour and a half we dip into a stream, a Great Underdream that is always flowing even when we are not having what we normally call "a dream". We might imagine this Underdream as the soul eternally musing about its life, and inviting the ego in ("the water's fine," it murmurs.") The underdream is what the soul wants the ego to embody in the dayworld. ..Each night dream represents our brief descent into the Great Underdream, a dipping of our toes into the soulstream, a briefing on one or two points about the deeper life waiting and longing to be lived." Bill Plotkin
In soulcentric dream work, we do not analyze the dream, instead we enter it and befriend it. We ask, "Why has this dream come?" "Who is visiting me?" "What am I being asked to see, feel, hear, experience?" The dream is an invitation. It invites transformation, healing, inquiry, discovery, feeling, connection... It wants to show you something that you do not know, take you places you don't want to go, feel things you might not want to feel, expand you in ways you might be afraid to expand. It wants to take you deeper into who you are, what you are here for and what you are doing that is no longer serving you. It seeks your growth, change, healing and transformation and it offers this to you every, single night.
Befriending the images in your dreams is life changing. Begin by writing down your dreams as you remember them, as if they are happening right now. For instance... "I am in the woods, it is dark, there is a light ahead and I move toward it..." Pay special attention to places you don't want to go, creatures or people that frighten or repulse you, feelings that show up in the dream. Ask that feeling, place, or being to accompany you on your day. Feel what it was feeling. Move the way it moved. Seek to experience the dream, not to figure it out. Treat the dream as a gift, a Being that has come to you for a reason. Honor it, be curious. Ask for dreams, ask to be so gifted by your soul.
What would change for you if you knew that you were being given a gift from your soul, every single night, a letter that you never open. What might be possible if you lived as if that were true?
